Fables of the Reconstruction стал первым диском R.E.M., записанным в Лондоне[12] с известным продюсером Джо Бойдом, который ранее сотрудничал с Ником Дрейком и группой Fairport Convention[13]. Сессии сопровождались сложностями, отразившимися на звучании альбома[4]: в отличие от предыдущих работ группы на Fables of the Reconstruction заметно влияние психоделии[13].

Альбом сопровождался тремя синглами. Композиция «Driver 8» достигла в чарте Top Rock Tracks журнала «Billboard» 22-й позиции, а «Cant Get There from Here» заняла в том же хит-параде 14-е место[14]. Сингл «Wendell Gee» стал первым для группы, оказавшимся в британском чарте[15]. Сам же альбом достиг 28-го места в США[14], 35-го — в Великобритании[15] и 29-го — в Новой Зеландии[16].

Гитарист R.E.M. Питер Бак называл альбом Fables of the Reconstruction любимым в творчестве группы, а также отметил, что «гордится тем, насколько странен этот альбом»[12].
