«Я не согласен ни с одним словом, которое вы говорите, но готов умереть за ваше право это говорить» (вариант: «Я не разделяю ваших убеждений, но готов умереть за ваше право их высказывать») — крылатое выражение о принципах свободы слова, демократии, приписываемое Вольтеру (без указания произведения). На самом деле авторство принадлежит английской писательнице Эвелин Холл и прозвучало в её книге-биографии Вольтера «The Friends of Voltaire» (1906)[1][2][3]:

I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it[4].

В книге эта фраза прозвучала в вымышленном эпизоде сожжения книги Гельвеция «Об уме».

Эвелин Холл перефразировала слова Вольтера из «Трактата о веротерпимости» (в переводе на английский):

Not only is it extremely cruel to persecute in this brief life those who do not think the way we do, but I do not know if it might be too presumptuous to declare their eternal damnation.

Впервые без ссылки на Эвелин Холл фраза была приписана Вольтеру в «Ридерз дайджест» (номер за июнь 1934 года). Настоящий автор фразы специально дала интервью по этому поводу[5]:

Я не хотела создать впечатление, что это подлинные слова Вольтера и удивилась бы, если бы они были найдены в каком-нибудь из его произведений. Это всего лишь парафраз слов Вольтера из «Очерков о терпимости» — «Думайте и позволяйте другим думать тоже».

I did not mean to imply that Voltaire used these words verbatim and should be surprised if they are found in any of his works. They are rather a paraphrase of Voltaire’s words in the Essay on Tolerance — «Think for yourselves and let others enjoy the privilege to do so too».

В книге Норберта Гутермана[6] псевдовольтеровская фраза приводится как подлинные слова Вольтера с переводом на французский и ссылкой на письмо Вольтера к аббату ле Ришу (фр. Le Riche) от 6 февраля 1770 года.

Данная трактовка поддержана в книге «Они никогда не говорили этого»[7]. В ней приводится следующая фраза из письма:

I detest what you write, but I would give my life to make it possible for you to continue to write.

Однако в письме такой фразы нет:

Aristophanes (this man that the commentators admire because he was Greek, not thinking that Socrates was Greek also), Aristophanes was the first who accustomed the Athenians to consider Socrates an atheist. … The tanners, the shoemakers and the dressmakers of Athens applauded a joke in which one represented Socrates raised in the air in a basket, announcing there was God, and praising himself to have stolen a coat by teaching philosophy. A whole people, whose bad government authorized such infamous licences, deserved well what it got, to become the slave of the Romans, and today of the Turks.
